Kartel, Gaza Slim remanded
JAILED entertainer Vybz Kartel was again denied bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court along with fellow Portmore Empire artiste Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler, on Monday.
The two artistes appeared before Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey to answer to charges of conspiracy and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The charges stem from allegations that Vybz Kartel sent texts to Saddler, leading to her reporting to the police that she had been robbed by Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, who had in fact been murdered before the reported robbery occurred.
Williams is the person for whose murder Kartel and his associates — Andre St John, Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Cairo Jones, Calvin Haye and Shane Williams — are charged. The prosecution is contending that the report was made in order to give the impression that Williams was not dead.
In a forceful bail application Monday, attorney Chris Tavares-Finson told the court that no cellphone had been seized from Kartel while he was in lock-up and that the prosecution will have difficulty proving the nexus between Kartel and the texts that were allegedly sent to Saddler.
To no avail, Tavares-Finson asked that Pusey impose any condition and offer his client bail to a sum she deems fit. He also said that Kartel’s seven children were suffering hardship as a result of his incarceration.
But Pusey said that Kartel is before the court on other grave charges and denied the bail application.
Both were given a return date of February 1 when the case file is expected to be completed. Saddler’s bail, recently secured in the High Court, was extended by Pusey.
Williams is alleged to have been murdered on August 16 over the disappearance of an illegal firearm. His body is yet to be found. The prosecution, however, said they have video and other evidence to prove the murder.
The men are to be tried for Williams’ murder in the Home Circuit Court where they will next appear on January 13. However, Williams and St John are to appear in the magistrate’s court on January 13 as part of the process to have them join the other accused men in the Home Circuit Court.
Also, Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, and other men are also facing murder and other charges in relation to the shooting death of Barrington ‘Bossie’ Bryan of Gregory Park, St Catherine in July. On this matter, Kartel was offered bail to the sum of $3 million in the High Court.
He is to appear in the Gun Court Division of the RM court today on this charge.
On a separate matter, Kartel is to return to the Resident Magistrate’s Court on February 13 when he will be tried on a ganja possession charge.
