Girlz on fire!
SAN CRISTOBAL, Dominican Republic — Jamaica opened up the canons yesterday to blow away hosts Dominican Republic, 4-0, in their do-or-die CFU World Cup qualifying game at the San Cristobal Football Stadium.
Leading from the front, captain Trudi Carter found the opener in the first minute, to be followed by Marlo Sweatman in the 49th, Kimberly Spence in the 66th and Shenika Williams a minute from time.
Goals were of vital importance entering the match, and with four yesterday and two on Sunday, the Young Reggae Girlz have a total of six, with one against, as negotiating chips should goal difference be required to be a tie-breaker for the best runner-up spot across the two zones.
Haiti continued their dominant ways by thrashing The Cayman Islands, 3-0, to top the group on maximum nine points to book their spot to the CONACACAF Finals where they will join the USA, Canada, Mexico, Panama and Guatemala.
Jamaica will still have to wait to know their fate after today’s final set of games in Zone F being played in Cuba to see if they book the runner-up spot. It could be a long and anxious wait.
The Girlz found themselves in this dilemma after losing their tournament-opener 0-1 against the dangerous Haiti.
In Havana on Monday, hosts Cuba and Puerto Rico drew 1-1, while Trinidad and Tobago fought back from their opening loss to edge Guyana, 2-1.
After two games, Cuba lead the group on goal difference on four points over Puerto Rico, with T&T on three points and Guyana at the bottom on nought.
In tomorrow’s final round of matches, Puerto Rico face Guyana, while Cuba and Trinidad battle.
Jamaica stunned the partisan support in the very first minute when Carter beat an out-of-place goalkeeper Isairis Ramos with a 25-yard right-footer that signalled a turnaround from her profligacy against The Cayman Islands.
The Young Girlz stamped their mark on the game henceforth, but again, their offensive thrust lacked conviction.
Kimberly Spence, who scored the opener in the 2-0 win over Cayman and the inspiration in the overall effort, was sluggish and did not offer that spark her teammates have come to expect.
In the 27th minute, and in a similar fashion when she scored a couple of days ago, she was let loose on goal from midfield, but after an incisive run and with the goalkeeper as the solitary obstacle, she fired wide from 16 yards.
With Jamaica failing to take advantage of their chances, the Dominican Republic slowly got into the game and were helped by some indecisive defending by the visitors.
It is not known what was said in the dressing room at the interval, but the Girlz returned with renewed energy and immediately went on the offensive.
After probing for openings, they got their breakthrough when Sweatman looped Ramos from 25 yards.
But when it appeared Spence’s day wasn’t going to get any better, her luck dramatically changed when she stabbed home from a web of tangled feet inside the box to make it 3-0.
Another opportunity dropped Jamaica’s way in the 78th when Shenika Williams delightfully volleyed goalward from 17 yards, but substitute goalie Elanni Bonilla was equal to the task. Jamaica got their fourth when substitute Melissa Bryan made room for herself atop the 18-yard box and unleashed on goal. The goalkeeper could not hold on and spilled the ball for Wiliams to tap in her second goal of the tournament as a second-half sub.
