Necessary Luxury – Michael Subratie
Managing Director, T Geddes Grant Limited
I am a gadget person, and love to have the latest technology. I have my Digicel BlackBerry and have been an addict for a number of years now, and that together with my MacBook Pro are my most important essentials. I have to stay in touch with the office at all times, get my e-mails, and keep up to date.
My Herman Miller Aeron chair is absolutely essential. It is absolutely the best you can get for your back, and the chairs are so cool, they are always in the movies, and when you go to offices in New York, etc. Our office division has just started bringing them in, and so there are some very comfortable executives out there, just sitting in the coolest chairs.
My camera is also very important to me. I have a young family, and so I keep the small Nikon camera with me, but also have an SLR, too, for special occasions. I recently went on vacation and I think I took over 2,000 pictures, but it has been a hobby of mine for years. I have been posting some pictures on the Mi Island Jamaica website, which is a new start-up Jamaican website.
My GPS Garmin watch and my Garmin Nuvi device are fantastic, even here in Jamaica. I like to go running, and am able to plot my route on a map when I go out on the Garmin; I have also done this on bike rides. Mona GeoInformatics has mapped out pretty much all of Jamaica, and so actually few people know that you can use a Garmin device here in Jamaica. If you have one already that you use abroad you can take it up there, and they will load on the Jamaican data for you! It’s awesome!
I just got the Kindle Fire, so am keeping this with me to get the hang of it, but it does mean that I can load up on books, and keep my library with me at all times! It downloads movies, too. The iPad really has the same function but my kids tend to get their hands on it to use it for apps, so it is the perfect babysitter, as well as being a great tool for looking at documents on the go!
And, of course, couldn’t do without the Tumi bag to keep it all in.
