Cocktails With – Llorenia Muir-Green
Dermatologist Llorenia Muir-Green is sipping red wine with SO at Devon House’s Mahogany Tree Bar and gabbing about her recent return from The Pond, her eagerly anticipated book on haircare for black women, and why she’s so passionate about hair.
What are you sipping today?
Robert Giraud Cépages Merlot.
What kind of day are you having?
A good one, now that I’ve met up with some friends from overseas whom I haven’t seen in a while.
What’s your ideal relaxation spot?
Lying in a hammock or under a tree at the beach.
What’s your latest obsession?
Local fruit. I absolutely missed our mangoes while I was studying abroad.
Socialite or homebody?
Homebody.
Flats or stilettos?
Depends on my mood, but I tend to go for flats.
Jeans or LBD?
Jeans. I’m not the “girly-girl”, but I do go glam when I’m ready.
What turns you off?
When people don’t respect my time.
In a sentence, who is Llorenia?
Quiet and unassuming; there is a lot more to me once you get to know me.
What is it about hair that made you want to study it?
My interest in hair started when I wanted my hair to return to its natural state as a teenager. My aim was to learn how to take care of my hair despite all the negative concepts that I had been told about my hair type all my life. After studying medicine, my interest started to include hair-related disorders, especially hair loss.
What’s your must-have accessory?
Headgear — scarves, tams. I love to wrap my hair.
What’s your style?
I like to keep it simple but elegant.
What’s in your handbag?
My mobile phone, lipgloss, keys, purse and lotion.
What perfume are you spraying?
None. I get too many headaches with them.
What’s your idea of the perfect man?
Someone who is down-to-earth and has his priorities right.
What’s your idea of the perfect date?
Cooking our favourite meals together, then feeding each other at our own candelit indoor picnic.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
People who refuse to put their phone on silent when in a meeting — absolutely irritating.
Do you allow someone to do your hair?
Yes, I do go to Monique’s Beauty Home.
As a doctor who has special interest in hair, are you particular about what goes into your hair?
Yes, I am very particular about what goes into my hair. I read labels before I purchase products. A lot of products are just fluff with no substance.
Who does your nails?
I rarely go to a salon to do my nails.
When you’re not working, where’s the best place to find you?
Home or hanging with friends.
What’s in your car stereo/on your iPod?
Old-school rap or reggae.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Work in an area that you love, otherwise your life will be miserable.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever given to someone about their hair?
Deep-condition (steam) your hair regularly; it will make that much of a difference.
What do you feel is your best character trait?
I’m a good listener.
And your worst?
I worry too much.
Who or what inspires you?
My dad — I’ve seen his “can-do” attitude accomplish so much.
What projects are you currently working on?
My book on haircare for black women.
And 10 years from now?
Hopefully, I would have accomplished some of my long-term goals.
