Blast Them Away explodes in Ruckus Trophy
WAYNE DaCosta, champion trainer for the 11th time, completed the 2011 season in symbolic fashion when he posted his imported juvenile, Blast Them Away, to an emphatic 5 1/2-length victory in the $1,000,000 Sweet Ruckus Trophy Graded Stakes two-year-old feature at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Owned by Robert K Thomas and ridden by Dane Nelson, the imported bay colt ran 1,400 metres in a smart time of 1:25.2 to complete his two-year-old season undefeated in four starts on local soil.
Installed the 1-5 favourite among a talented field of imported horses, Blast Them Away demonstrated that he is one for the future as after dismissing Richieshappynotion after turning up the lane, it was a case of who would finished nearest.
It was another talented American-bred, bay filly Noon It Is, ridden by Omar Walker, who took up the challenge to finish second at odds of 8-1.
Italiano, the only local-bred in the field and stablemate of the winner, ridden by Aaron Chatrie, came calling, but the die had already been cast and he had to be content to show another two lengths back ahead of early leader Richieshappynotion, who completed the frame as a 4-1 chance ridden by Shane Ellis in the field of eight.
A field of 10 was originally declared, but Tantaloo and Ali’s Wonderboy were late non-starters.
Blast Them Away, a bay colt by Proud Accolade out of Evita Villa (Forest Wildcat), was bred by Wooddsfield Farm in the USA and pocketed $546,000 as the winner’s share for his owners to increase his earnings from four career starts to $1,809,100 lifetime.
Meanwhile, Sunlight Express, the 3-4 favourite ridden by Ellis, won the $715,000 Stewards Cup secondary feature by 2 1/2 lengths over the 4-1 chance, Sunshine Boy, ridden by Ameth Robles.
Trained by Richard Azan for owners Von White and Alexander Haber, Sunlight Express ran 1,000m round in a time of 1:00.2 to capture the maiden special weight event for native-bred colts and geldings.
