Protruding persons continue to bother police
THE problem of supporters from both major political parties hanging dangerously from moving vehicles continues to be an issue for the police, despite repeated warnings of prosecution.
“We have been getting a number of reports about people hanging off buses despite calls we have made for his practice to be addressed,” said Radcliffe Lewis, the superintendent of police in charge of traffic.
No arrests have been made even as the party supporters conducted this unsafe and unlawful behaviour in the presence of the police. Both officials from the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People’s National Party (PNP) have warned supporters to desist the dangerous practice.
Today, at the height of Nomination Day proceedings, supporters from both parties in Kingston and Spanish Town could be seen precariously hanging out of buses and cars.
Protruding supporters of PNP candidate Andre Hylton and those of the JLP’s Dr Saphire Longmore could be seen along Hope Road and Mona Road.
In Spanish Town the scene was the same with supporters of the PNP’s Denise Daley.
Along, Beechwood Avenue in Kingston, PNP supporters on motorbikes were driving recklessly, forcing oncoming motorists to swerve out of their way as they drifted aggressively from lane to lane. The bikes carried pillion riders and none wore helmets.
“I felt endangered by these thugs who had no regard for fellow road users,” said a motorist.
