David Hilton Coore: the foreign minister
Dear Editor,
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade is deeply saddened by the passing of David Hilton Coore, who served Jamaica with great distinction as minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade between 1989 and 1993.
Mr Coore applied his brilliant legal mind in the development and implementation of Jamaica’s foreign policy, and helped to advance the interests of Jamaica at the bilateral, regional, hemispheric, and global levels. He advocated tirelessly and with great effectiveness for the recognition of and attention to the positions of Jamaica and developing countries in various international fora, including the Caribbean Community, the United Nations, the Inter-American Development Bank and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT, now WTO).
Those who were privileged to work with him recall his very good relationship with the staff of the foreign ministry and his concern for their welfare and well-being. He did his utmost to ensure that the ministry had the support it needed to represent Jamaica effectively. The ministry offers its deepest sympathy to his family and joins with the nation in celebrating the life of this great Jamaican and his contribution to national development.
