What’s happening at Trench Town High?
Dear Editor,
As a past student of Trench Town High School, I am saddened by the reported gun find at the school and the fact that two youngsters, aged 13 and 17 are implicated.
I attended TTHS during the turbulent 80s. During that period of our undeclared civil war, we had to often “get flat” when the warring tribes were engaged in their mutual annihilation. At that time, Grace Smith was principal. Mrs Smith was a disciplinarian of no mean order. I can say without fear of contradiction that no student, in his or her right mind, would dare take a weapon on the school compound. Period. We knew that if we created any mischief at school, we would be unceremoniously expelled! No if, but, or maybe about that. During Mrs Smith’s tenure she was ably assisted by a board chaired by Bunny Goodison. That team retired a few years ago and there’s a new management team.
I and other well-thinking Jamaicans, especially the present students and staff, wish to hear from the team as to what contributed to the dramatic decline in school discipline in just a few years.
