Let ‘Jamaican Commonwealth’ represent us
Dear Editor,
I am in total agreement with the prime minister on his stand to move towards constitutional amendment to allow for people with dual allegiance to offer themselves for political office.
It is unfair and ludicrous for us to allow people from the British Commonwealth to serve in the legislature provided that they have been living in the country for one year prior to Nomination Day, while people who were born in Jamaica and have attained citizenship in another country are ineligible. This suggests that Commonwealth citizens possess more rights in Jamaica than a Jamaican-born citizen in his own country.
Mr Holness correctly stated that the Jamaican “Commonwealth” is its diaspora. We should therefore create an avenue for those in the “Jamaican Commonwealth” to come back and represent us.
I hope that this irritating dual-citizenship issue will be addressed as soon as possible.
