Fancied teams KO’d in Sutherland first round
The LIME St Catherine Lincoln ‘Happy’ Sutherland Knock-out competition kicked off last Thursday with four of the fancied teams crashing out at the first hurdle.
Thirty-one teams are participating and already, former Premier League contenders Rivoli United, Black Lion, Royal Lakes and Tru-Juice have all fallen to teams playing in lower divisions.
Super League team Rivoli United crashed, 1-2, to Major League outfit Christian Pen despite taking an early lead courtesy of a Fidel Anderson strike in the 28th minute.
But Christian Pen, currently seventh in the Major League on four points from three games, rallied with goals from Maurice Mais in the 39th, while Patrick Smalling found the winner in the 68th for a famous win.
Major League leaders Black Lion succumbed, 2-3, to a Flamingo team one division below and struggling in sixth place in the Division One League on five points from four games.
Actually, Theodore Thomas gave Black Lion a dream start by netting in the fifth minute, but Flamingo turned on the heat in style, scoring three goals in 34 minutes.
Kevin McDonald equalised in the 36th, before Delano Williams gave them the lead with a 60th-minute goal. Andre Herrear put them further ahead in the 70th before Fabian Whyne reduced the arrears in time added on
Another Super League team, Royal Lakes, lost 1-2 on Thursday to a Watson Grove team playing two divisions below them and currently in fourth spot in the Division One League on six points from four games.
Sean Matthews gave Royal Lakes the lead in the 42nd and Demarley Barnes pulled Watson Grove level in the 60th. The fairly book script was set for Julian Johnson as he netted the winner in time added.
The upsets continued when Division One team Upfront United edged struggling Major League team Tru-Juice, 2-1, in a come-from-behind win.
Osvaldo Hunter gave Tru-Juice a 20th-minute lead before goals by Suelae McCalla and Gawain Smith in the 40th and 57th, respectively, propelled Upfront United into the next round.
Old Harbour Bay brought some sense of normality to proceedings by clipping East Portmore Portals, 1-0, courtesy of a Lowan Myers goal in the 52nd.
Super League team Bodles comfortably dismissed Division One strugglers Waterford, 3-0. Rohan Bartley in the 27th, Calvin Blair in the 43rd and Sanjay Harrison in the 68th was enough to see off a Waterford team in ninth spot on with one point from three games.
