High fuel prices in Jamaica
Dear Sir,
Oil prices are down by 30 per cent from a high of over US $113 / barrel in February/March of this year.
During the Libyan crisis, gas and gas oil prices rushed, within weeks to JA $110 to JA$115 per litre in Jamaica by March/April.
Oil is now US $83-$85 per barrel on the world market, with corresponding percentage decreases in Brent Crude Oil, the lowest it as been for months, yet weeks later no corresponding fall here in Jamaica.
Something is wrong with the price mechanism here in Jamaica for gas and gas oil prices to fall so low on the world market, yet in Jamaica it hardly moves.
This is very dishonest and a ‘rape’ of the Jamaican people as the price of this commodity affects the transportation, manufacturing industries and the ordinary consumer, and also has an overall inflationary effect on the economy.
Something must to done to remove this unfair burden from our backs, the ‘Government’ needs to act and can act, but Petrojam seems to be deliberately using this unfair practise to generate revenue we imagine.
Will the government and Petrojam only respond to protest action on the street? Or will they do the honest and honourable thing.
