Petersfield land Westmoreland U-17 football title
SAVANNA-A-MAR, Westmoreland — Last year’s beaten finalists Petersfield FC earned a hard-fought 5-4 penalty-kick win over first-time entrants Race Course in the final of the Hamilton Estates/Ice Hills Entertainment Westmoreland Football Association Under-17 competition at Llandilo playfield on Saturday.
The sparse crowd was treated to a keen contest in a match that went to extra time during which time the teams failed to score, thus forcing the dreaded penalty kicks.
As tension mounted, both goalkeepers each saved one of the mandatory five strikes as the teams ended that segment level on four goals. But Petersfield’s custodian, Anthony Hamilton, went one better by saving the first penalty in the sudden-death alternate kicks to hand his team the title.
“The players put in the necessary work and dedication to achieve this victory,” noted Coach Keeble Patrick.
For the victory, Pertersfield collected $60,000 and the championship trophy, while Race Course earned $40,000 for second spot, while Chantilly Forever carried off $30,000 and Negril FC pocketed $20,000.
