How… To Become A Supermarket Cashier
When you visit the supermarket, the cashier is the penultimate person to check you and your purchases out.
Thursday Food recently visited General Foods supermarket in Liguanea Plaza last weekend where the store’s manager Sheryl Chung and front-of-house supervisor Janelle Rose explained what it takes to become a cashier.
The supervisor explained that cashiers should be at least 18 years old. CXC passes in English and Mathematics afford an edge but are not essential, as a logical thinker who has common sense is an excellent fit.
Cashiers are required to perform two primary duties following two to three days of on-the-job training.
Rose pointed out that as cashiers have to work shifts, the proximity from home to work is also taken into account as their personal safety and family commitments.
1. Excellent Customer Service
Cashiers are required to be pleasant and courteous in their demeanour as they greet the customer, inform them of the store specials, and cash out their groceries. Cashiers must also try as best as possible to ensure satisfactory customer experience.
2. Balancing the Tills & Cashing Groceries
As well as dealing with customers, handling money is the inevitable core of a cashier’s daily responsibilities. To this end, Ms Rose said cashiers are allotted a set amount of cash [float] at the beginning of the day or the start of their work shift. “At the end of the day, they have to balance off the float along with the purchases cashed throughout the course of their shift.
