Seeing to the customers – Shanika Lewis, customer service rep
TWO months after being promoted to senior customer service representative, Shanika Lewis, an employee of the Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS), has been named one of their top performers for 2010.
The 24-year-old is thrilled.
“When I received the news… I was overwhelmed with excitement. At the same time, I was also humbled that my peers and senior management had considered me a worthy candidate,” she told Career & Education.
Lewis has also earned the designation as the 2010 Employee of the Quarter for the VMBS Spanish Town branch where she is currently based.
Her responsibilities include introducing VMBS’ products and services to existing and potential customers. A typical workday sees her closing and opening new accounts, updating and maintaining customer information, conducting basic loan interviews, issuing automated banking machine cards, and providing information to customers on some of their best financial options.
It is work that she finds exciting, but which she has admitted is not without its share of challenges.
“The challenges I face with my job are wide and vary. One (of them is) interacting with customers with different personalities and demands. (However), at the end of each transaction, I always try to make each customer feel valued and respected,” said the University of the West Indies graduate, who holds a first degree in management studies.
Lewis has admitted to being inspired by the recognition received from the financial institution.
“These awards not only act as a motivator, but also as a force which allows me to continue performing my duties with pride (and) to the best of my ability, while ensuring that the mission of VMBS is always maintained at the highest level,” she said.
And Lewis is grateful for the chance to serve.
“It has always been my desire to work in a financial institution. Being given the (chance) to become a part of the VMBS family has afforded me the opportunity to develop professionally and personally,” she said.
Asked whether she considered herself a top performer, Lewis said yes, noting that she embodied qualities, such as flexibility, integrity, teamwork, innovation, respect, excellence, and enthusiasm — all of which helped to make her a good worker.
“It is ultimately my desire to be promoted to a position within the Marketing Department. Then I will be able to adequately utilise the skills which I have acquired while obtaining my degree as well as the experience I have gained from VMBS,” Lewis said, pointing to one of her career goals.
