Business Leader Foreign Investor award timely — JAMPRO
JAMPRO, the State agency established to attract new investments to Jamaica, says the focus of the 2009 Observer Business Leader Awards supports its message that Jamaica is open for business and that the country welcomes foreign capital.
“This year’s decision to recognise foreign investors who have decided to make Jamaica their home is a timely recognition of the significant contribution that these organisations and individuals have made to the Jamaican economy,” said JAMPRO president Sancia Templer.
Noting that JAMPRO has worked extensively with these investors over the years, Templer pointed out that between 2005 and 2009 Jamaica attracted $4.9 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) and has been classified as an ‘over-performing country’ in terms of GDP to FDI ratio.
“Foreign investments continue to support Jamaica’s economic development through the injection of much needed capital, technology and infrastructure,” she said.
“An important feature of this award has been the extensive media coverage on the work and accomplishments of the nominees and their organisations,” Templer added. “This has allowed for all Jamaicans to be aware of and appreciate the transformational impact of many of these business leaders on the industries in which they operate.”
Speaking to JAMPRO’s continuing efforts to increase investor awareness of the business opportunities available in various sectors, Templer said that next year the agency will increase its outward promotional efforts to include various types of activities in Canada, the USA, India and other countries.
