Ebony Star, Free Town advance in Clarendon KO
CROSS, Clarendon — Ebony Stars and Free Town are through to the second-round of the Claro/Clarendon Football Association’s Knockout competition after scoring contrasting first-round victories over Gayle FC and Wood Hall, respectively, on Thursday.
Ebony Stars, with goals from Dwayne Walker in the 37th minute and Christopher Powell in the 62nd, blanked Gayle 2-0 in their second-leg meeting at the Comfort Community Centre to advance 3-1 on aggregate, while Free Town got by Wood Hall 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 aggregate scoreline after full and extra time.
In another result, Spartan Athletics FC extended their run of unbeaten games to 14 dating back to last season’s Division One competition, after blanking Longwood 2-0 in their first-leg meeting at Monymusk.
Eric Barton opened the scoring for the Ann-Marie Powell-coached team in the 39th minute, while Davian Williams made the game safe with the second goal 14 minutes from time.
Elsewhere, Cockpit outscored Coffalls 3-2 with goals from Mark Wellington (19th), Gary Watson (37th) and Collis Gordon (74th), while Comfort and Gimme-Me-Bit ended goalless.
Two more second-round qualifiers will be known today, with Sporting Athletic and Cross United set to raise the curtains on a double-header at Cross, starting at 1:00 pm.
Both sides will have it all to play for after they failed to break the deadlock in their first-leg meeting at Mineral Heights last Saturday.
The other game, scheduled to get underway at 3:00, will see Major League team York Town FC taking an away-goal lead into their return-leg clash with Original Hazard following a 1-1 stalemate in the first game.
