Anne Hathaway lampoons Kate Middleton in racy SNL skit
Anne Hathaway played a shell-shocked Kate Middleton last weekend in a hilarious sketch for Saturday Night Live. The spoof saw Kate left open-mouthed as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip turned on her the minute Prince William’s back was turned.
The suddenly foul-mouthed royals reduced their future granddaughter to tears as they mocked her and accused her of wanting a piece of their ‘palace action’. Wearing a dress almost identical to the gown worn by the real Kate Middleton on the day of the royal engagement announcement, Hathaway looked the spitting image of the future Queen of England. She was all smiles as Prince William, played by Andy Samberg, told his grandparents: “You remember my girlfriend Catherine? We wanted you to be the first to know that we are to be wed.” At first the Queen, played by Fred Armisen, seemed delighted at the news, telling Kate: “We welcome you to our family with open hearts.” But the moment Prince William left the room, she dropped her well-spoken tone in favour of a cockney accent standing with one leg on a chair, hitching up her skirt and snapped: “Is this what you want? You think you can just show up and take over and do a bit of Queening?” The Queen also told a quivering Kate to: “Drop the ‘Majesty’ crap. Call me Debra.” The royals then proceeded to tell a terrified Kate that she needed to ‘know the rules’ before joining their family. When William’s wife-to-be assured them she had been briefed on etiquette, Prince Phillip quipped: “We’re not talking about salad forks. This is not The Princess Diaries — a reference to one of Hathaway’s movies. When her husband-to-be returned, Kate burst into tears and fell into his arms.
