MoBay police kill taximan in alleged shoot-out
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The police’s Bureau of Special Investigations was yesterday called in to investigate Wednesday night’s death of taxi operator Shaun Marshall, who was shot in an alleged shoot-out. A police inspector was injured in the incident.
A primary school student and an elderly man who were also injured in the crossfire during the alleged gunfight have been hospitalised.
Marshall of Spaulding, Clarendon and Providence in Flankers, St James, allegedly hit the inspector with a blunt object, causing him to fall, when the policeman attempted to confiscate his motor car for breaches of the Road Traffic Act.
The taximan, who was said to be transporting a male passenger who was allegedly armed with a firearm, sped off along Barnett Street when the inspector fell.
The constabulary said that the taximan was accosted by a police team near the Barnett Street station when the passenger began firing. Marshall, the police said, was hit during the ensuing shoot-out. It was at that time the bystanders were shot and injured.
The armed passenger, who the police believe was shot and injured, escaped through the nearby Montego Bay Transport Centre.
