Meadows, Fraziers advance in St Catherine KO
SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine — Inspired by a masterful performance from Ross Burton, Meadows FC overcame a three-goal deficit to outscore Travellers FC 6-4, as the LIME/St Catherine Knockout football competition kicked off in dramatic style at the Spanish Town Prison Oval on Thursday night.
In the day’s opener, Fraziers Whip were made to toil before scoring a 2-0 extra-time win over Dunbeholden after both sides played out to 0-0 scoreline in regulation time.
But all the excitement would come in the feature game, where Division One outfit Travellers looked on course for a big upset win over South Central Confederation Super League champions Meadows, after they had taken a 4-1 lead with just about 20 minutes left on the clock.
However, a brace and a triple assist from Burton saw the Spanish Town club hitting back with five goals inside 12 minutes to save themselves major embarrassment.
The competition was originally formatted to be played over two legs in the first-round, but according the St Catherine Football Association in a release on Thursday, the fixtures will be changed to a straight knockout “because of some technical difficulties”.
As a result, Meadows and Fraziers will advance to the second-round where they will battle each other for a quarter-final spot.
The first-round continues this weekend with five matches.
Today, Waterford FC host Rivoli United at Waterford High, Bodles FC and Treadways FC meet at HI-Pro and Tru-Juice play away to Cumberland. Tomorrow, Invaders tackle Black Lion at Pleasant Farm, and Upfront go up against Albion United at Polly Ground Oval.
Matches start at 3:00 pm on both days.
Meanwhile, the LIME/Central St Catherine Division Two will begin today at the Spanish Town Prison Oval with a traditional dress parade followed by a double-header.
Church Pen United take on Angels United in one game, while Ensome FC play Federal FC in the other. The day’s activities begin at 12:00 pm.
