Schoolgirl netball champs stay on course
DEFENDING champions The Queen’s School and St Hugh are the first two teams to qualify for the semi-finals of the respective Digicel Urban Area Schoolgirls Junior and Senior Netball Leagues after their latest victories in the penultimate round at the Leila Robinson Courts yesterday.
With one the remaining round to be played next Monday, the rush for the semi-finals is on in both divisions.
The Queen’s had things easy against Meadowbrook, 30-20. It was the first defeat for the latter, while the former remain unbeaten this season.
Queen’s are expected to take on Camperdown in their final game in Group 1 of the Juniors. The Seniors also came out easy winners of St Andrew Technical High, 28-22, to to also lead their group. They will next play Camperdown in their last game of the second round.
Meanwhile, St Hugh’s whipped Excelsior 25-12 after leading throughout the contest 8-3, 16-6 and 19-8.
St Catherine maintained their unbeaten run by turning back Wolmer’s Girls’, 22-17, and will play St Hugh’s on Monday.
Bridgeport’s Seniors defeated Wolmer’s 35-21 and will meet St Hugh’s to determine the group winners.
St Andrew High should finish second behind The Queen’s, who handed them their only defeat of the season in Group 1 of the Seniors — a close 19-14 result.
St Andrew High defeated Haile Selassie 29-19 and will play STATHS in their final game in the second round. St Andrew should finish second behind The Queen’s and advance to the semis as they defeated St Jago 31-15.
In other results in the Junior League: Camperdown beat Vauxhall, 27-16; Mona beat Hydel, 22-13.
In the Senior League: Camperdown beat Vauxhall, 35-15, and former champions Tarrant beat Alpha, 29-24.
