Youth must be more proactive
AN urgent call is being made to youth to be more proactive in their own development. Speaking at the Launch of Youth Month, Youth must be more proactivef the Youth Parliamentary Watch appealed to young people to be more practical in their approach towards advancing their own development.
“As young people, we should be more active in development. We should take part in every single aspect of Jamaican life that promotes development,” McFarlane advocated
While expressing that the resources may be limited, he admonished young people to take the initiative by acquiring the necessary skills needed to transition from school to the work world. He also encouraged young people to become more active in governance, not just in politics, but in the school and community setting.
Additionally, McFarlane suggested that young people should better engage the business and financial sectors to ensure that youth are taken more seriously in the job market.
McFarlane stated that the youth needed to be organised in order to make impactful contributions to the society. In broaching the topic of tertiary education, he suggested that the youth should devise ways of generating student-friendly loan agreements with banks and the Students’ Loan Bureau. This, he said, will increase the number of educated young people who will be able to meaningfully give back to the country.
McFarlane was speaking at the Launch of Youth Month held on November 1 at the Campion College Auditorium in Kingston. The theme for this year’s Youth Month observances is ‘Jamaican Youth: Organising, Integrating and Participating for Development’.
