Gillings’ double strike dooms Clarendon
A double strike by Denmark Gillings gave defending champions St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) an important 2-1 win over former champions Clarendon College at Santa Cruz in the Inter-zone round of the daCosta Cup yesterday.
Gillings scored in the 32nd and the 35th minutes to bring his goalscoring tally to 11 for the season, while kristoff Forrester got the consolation for the Donovan Duckie-coached ‘CC’.
The win puts the Andrew Edwards-coached STETHS, who drew 0-0 with Spalding last week, on four point and in a good position to advance to the next round, but will need to beat Grange Hill, who defeated Spalding 2-0 yesterday.
Edwards was naturally happy for the win.
“Well, STETHS had no choice but to win the two remaining games in the Inter-zone round… we know that nothing but victory would be good enough for us… and there were moments when we lapsed, but overall, especially in the first half, I’m very pleased with that we executed the tactical plan…,” he said.
in the meantime, losing coach Duckie was very upset with the handling of the game by the referee.
“It’s a tough loss, but I thought the referee did a poor job,” a visibly upset Duckie said.
“The game should be reviewed, and that’s all I have to say, but I can’t take anything away from STETHS; they are deserving of the victory and we will just have to concentrate on winning the next game and we will rebound,” Duckie added.
