WILLOW Smith, the nine-year-old daughter of Hollywood’s couple Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith, released her phenomenal video for her debut single Whip My Hair on BET’s 106 and Park recently.

The video, directed by Ray Kay, spoke to being an individual and not being afraid to stand out of the crowd. This video is fresh, fun and colourful and if you have not seen it as yet, then you need to watch it as soon as possible.

Concept

Whipping your hair, according to Willow in her interview with 106 & Park, basically means strutting your stuff and having fun being an individual.

The video starts with people dressed in white and doing everything in unison to represent a world drained of life and colour. Smith then enters draped in a colourful and fashion forward ensemble and immediately grabs everyone’s attention with the contrast she creates. With one dip of her hair-ends in the paint, she starts whipping her hair and the creative and energetic vibe of everybody comes alive.

Dancing

The dancing mainly consisted of choreography centred on the title movement, which was accentuated by a lot of energetic movement and attitude. She is very energetic. She attacks each dance move and her facial expressions vary throughout the entire video. Her spunk and flare adds a lot more to the quality of her overall performance.

Ironically, the ‘fun and confident’ whipping movements of her hair, look very similar to the ‘dutty wine’ craze from 2006.

Styling

The styling of the video is a potent combination of retro and fashion forward looks, thanks to Rihanna’s stylist Mariel Haenn, and are helping to cement Willow as a fashion risk-taker. From the heart made out of braids to the funky coloured hair, the hairstyles in this video are not only playful but are chic and cute. To add to the overall unique look of the video, Willow sports some very funky nail art and her lips and eyes were popping with glitzy jewellery art. Some of the dancers were also rocking jackets from Willow’s combined clothing line with her brother Jaden.

Willow is whipping her hair and making no apologies for being young, cool and confident. With this video as a starting point, we can only expect great music and eye-catching fashion from the young phenomenon and we are looking forward to her progress in the music industry.
