We need higher standards of leadership
Dear Editor,
I am an unashamed admirer of Mr Danville Walker. He is forthright, outspoken, conscientious, competent and trustworthy – all valuable attributes to anyone aspiring to leadership.
He is the type of leader whom I would like to vote for. Unfortunately, he is not eligible to sit in Parliament and contribute his talents to this country, because of his dual citizenship!
We do not need to exclude people of his calibre.
My second point is that in a democracy we the people must vote for those who present themselves to be elected.
Today in Jamaica I can hardly blame potential leaders, those who may have the necessary qualities for leadership, for not putting themselves forward.
The more pork barrel, corruption, incompetence and frank partisanship that exists, the fewer people of integrity will be interested in putting themselves forward to represent the people. The sooner we educate people to be discerning about our representatives the sooner we will have higher standards in our leadership.
