Cellular towers not for residential areas
Dear Editor,
I am deeply concerned about the erection of cellular towers in or near residential and developed areas, where people spend a significant amount of time daily.
I am even more deeply concerned at the response of some of our local leaders. As I listened to Richard Creary, a councillor in St Mary on the morning news on October 19, I felt saddened.
Mr Creary, even if an unfortunate few are influenced by politics, the people have a right to voice their concerns. It is a legitimate concern, and no amount of income should be worth the life or the health of people. The concerns expressed by citizens on this matter are real. The fact is that
“over 100 physicians and scientists at Harvard and Boston University Schools of Public Health have called cellular towers a radiation hazard. And, 33 delegate physicians from seven countries have declared cellphone towers a “public health emergency” (Kennedy J Rogers). And there are more examples I could cite.
But if health or life aren’t a big enough consideration, then consider property value. Which well-thinking person will choose to reside close to a cellular tower? Who will buy a house if the residents decide to sell? What value will they have to place on their homes in order to get them sold?
No amount of money or assistance provided by any company can compensate for the risk taken. Companies often have other options available to them as it relates to location. They also have the option of sharing cellular towers, and act as truly “good corporate citizens”.
We all see the value in cellphones, and for those of us who choose to have one, we have made that choice. However, we did not make that choice to have further bombardment of radiation from a structure that constantly emits radiation. People have a right to live in peace in their homes and not be placed in any danger.
I urge the various companies to do better by the Jamaican people who have supported them for so many years.
