When our Under the Dryer team heard of a salon that operates on a certain set of principles, it piqued our interest. Claudine does not roller-set her clients’ hair unless they desire it, but rather divides their hair into four sections and blow-dries each for five minutes. Neither does she use hair oil, heavy shampoos and conditioners to weigh down the hair; there are no hairbrushes to pull on the strands. And with ‘treatments and once-weekly shampooing’ for growth and strength, and even monthly promotions like free shampoos for her clients, we were curious to know more.

Various sources pointed us in her direction as we went in search of a locally made miracle product — OX Organix Xtreme Revitalising Pre-Conditioning Treatment, made with natural ingredients and five essential oils. Our curiosity soon led us to SULTRY — a personalised, ultra-private salon — for a visit with City & Guilds-certified aesthetician Claudine Wolfe, who specialises in black hair, and we were most enlightened by our dialogue. Here’s what we learned.

Melissa Comrie — Streaks of Health

Melissa is a new client at SULTRY and has only “made a few visits over the last couple of weeks”, but she is already “impressed” with Claudine’s handiwork and has “decided to stick with her”. She visits today for a shampoo and OX treatment, which she was encouraged to do between periods of relaxing, especially as her hair is bleached. Claudine quickly executes the task.

The routine:

After which she divides Melissa’s hair into four sections and blow-dries each for five minutes. She then applies Redken Smooth Down anti-frizz serum and styles it with a ceramic flat iron to complete the look.

“I like the way it looks and it feels very soft. Since I’ve been doing the OX treatment my hair is stronger and easier to manage — especially with the bleaching.”

Nicholene Taylor — Bouncy Blunt Bob

Nicholene has been a client of SULTRY for four months, and she was literally gushing about the wonders of both the stylist and the product, telling our team she “can’t speak enough about how great it has been”. She too stopped by for a quick shampoo and OX treatment à la Claudine Wolfe.

The routine:

She then puts on a steam cap and places her under the dryer for 15 minutes. Her hair is then separated into four sections and each is blow-dried for five minutes. Claudine then applies Redken Smooth Down anti-frizz serum and styles her hair in a Keri Hilson-inspired ‘do with a ceramic flat iron.

Nicholene’s Take:

“I love this salon. Claudine introduced me to the treatment and I have never used a better product in my hair. Before OX, my hair was very brittle and dry, now it’s healthy and easy to maintain. I don’t have to use any additional products and my hair retains the sheen, it doesn’t break and it falls into place easily. All I have to do is wrap it at nights, comb it out in the mornings and put in a few big curlers in for about 40 minutes before I go, because the way it’s styled now makes it much easier to maintain.”

Alix Khourie — Jackie O’ Chic

Alix sports a glamorous ‘do, which is somewhat reminiscent of style icon and former first lady Jackie Onassis’ chic crop, which she loves. Her hair is natural, and she has been visiting SULTRY since it opened four months ago.

A recent user of the OX treatment, she quickly tells our team that she loves the product “because it promotes healthy hair”. She declares that she is “not a fan of heat styling, or super-straight hair”, and her expert stylist Claudine knows just what she likes.

The routine:

Firstly, TREsemmé Hydrating Shampoo is used to wash her hair, then OX Organix Xtreme Revitalising Pre-Conditioning Treatment is applied to her tresses, which Claudine slicks back with a rat-tail comb and allows to stand for 15 minutes under a steam cap. When the time has passed, she rinses out the treatment and conditions her hair with TREsemmé Vitamin E Moisture Rich Conditioner before rinsing again. She then blots it with a towel, leaving it to air-dry. After her hair dries, a dollop of Redken Smooth Down anti-frizz serum is worked through for added shine.

Linda Duvall — Healthy Growth

Linda gave SULTRY a try just three months ago, and “decided to work with it”. She knows the creator of the OX treatment personally, so unlike the other clients, she has been using it for a little over a year, as it was recommended to her when her hair was breaking badly. Linda was also encouraged to try Claudine Wolfe and quickly fell in love with her haircare prowess, so when she opened SULTRY salon with her partner Elaine Hylton, she quickly became a customer.

Michelle Nunez — Beautiful Blonde

Three months ago Michelle, like most of the clients featured, was introduced to SULTRY… and she has never looked back since. She, like Linda, was recommended to Claudine Wolfe as a spin-off of using the OX treatment, which she was encouraged to try in January of this year. Today she visits her trusty hairstylist for her regular biweekly shampoo and OX treatment, and Claudine quickly gets the job done. Here’s how.
