My Kingston – Asafa Powell
Jamaican sprinter
What’s your earliest memory of Kingston?
Heavy traffic and lots of noise.
What do you miss the most when you are not in Kingston?
Definitely the energy of the city…I’m never bored when in Kingston. Kingstonians are more outgoing and there’s always a lyme or the likelihood of meeting people.
Who or what inspires you?
My two brothers Donovan and Nigel.
What’s it like being a celebrated athlete?
Jamaicans love being on top and are very supportive of their own. I am always well-received, encouraged and supported by my people. On the international scene the Jamaican brand truly resonates, and the minute the crowd hears the name ‘Jamaica’ there’s an incredible roar.
What’s your favourite home comfort?
Definitely my king-size bed where I am able to relax and enjoy my video games.
And if you were the Mayor of Kingston for a day?
I’d love to see a reduction in the number of beggars on the streets. I’d also declare the day a National Smile Day!
What’s your middle name?
Kehine. Asafa Kehine means rising to the occasion.
And the last bit of music that stirred your soul?
Back Biter by Tarrus Riley
And the last movie watched?
Death At A Funeral
What was your last bit of retail therapy?
I purchased a Dolce & Gabbana suit to wear to the finals of the Miss Universe competition in Las Vegas.
Which cologne are you splashing?
Diesel
What’s your preferred beverage?
Pineapple juice.
And your most memorable meal in Kingston?
A shrimp pasta at TGI Fridays as well as a great salad from Jus Salads.
And your current projects?
The Asafa Powell Foundation with its mandate to help young children to achieve not just in athletics but also in any desired field. I got the opportunity to excel and want to show others that they can too.
Share with us a few of your favourite vacation spots.
Anywhere on the North coast. I travel a lot so when I come home I love to enjoy my country.
What’s your advice to a first-time visitor to Kingston?
Kingston is in many ways like New York city: fast, intense with non-stop activities. It’s up to you to know what you want out of it.
And Asafa’s philosophy?
Put God first, then focus on what it is you want to achieve in life and do it!
