Jomo Pitterson wins regional championship!
JAMAICA’S number one rated chess player, FIDE Master Jomo Pitterson, completed a run of over two years of exceptional results when he won the Subzonal Regional Championships in Nassau, Bahamas with a stunning seven points out of a possible nine.
Pitterson started the event well with a string of victories, including a well-executed win over the National Champion of Barbados Martyn Del Castillho, before being held to a draw by Women’s Grand Master Sarai Sanchez Castillho of Venezuela.

The dramatic action continued to the penultimate round when Pitterson held FIDE Master Gabriel Berrios Echevarria of Puerto Rico to a crucial draw to give himself a decisive lead into the final round, where he and fellow Jamaican FIDE Master Warren Elliott settled at dead lock. As a result of his unbeaten performance, he has been awarded the prestigious title of International Master, the second highest possible title in the sport.

Jamaica also enjoyed the largest contingent of players at the championships as National Champion FIDE Master Warren Elliott and National Masters Shane Matthews, Equitable Brown and Mark Holness have also ventured to represent Jamaica in the championships. The effort is thanks to sponsorship by Western Air, who provided a ticket for Elliott.
Pitterson and other Jamaican Masters will next represent Jamaica at the Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia from September 19 to October 4, 2010.
