Police force should resign
Dear Editor,
It is unfortunate that the Leader of the Opposition, who is said to be a Christian and sent by God to lead us, does not adhere to the scriptures. “How can you say to your brother, “Let me take the speck out of your eye, when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:4)
Minutes after the news broke that Al Miller was charged for perverting the course of justice and harbouring a fugitive, the party was all over the news demanding that the pastor should be relieved of his position from the National Transformation Programme.
On what moral grounds can they make such demands while Kern Spencer is still a member of parliament for the People’s National Party? This is such a blatant yet stupid attempt to try to score political points. The PNP seems to believe that most, if not all Jamaicans are ignorant. Furthermore, Al Miller seems to have more credibility than both political parties put together.
For the police to place charges on Rev Miller is another indictment of the security forces. The commissioner’s presentation at the press conference following the capture of Dudus shows how dilapidated and impotent the police force is, as he as commissioner could not state exactly what happened.
A police officer told the Observer that the vehicle in which Coke was travelling was being escorted by two cars carrying gunmen and police officers were following the convoy for hours. He further stated that the front car was allowed to get away because Coke was their main focus. When the cop was asked what happened to the third car which was travelling behind Coke’s vehicle, he said the driver sped away on realising that Coke’s car was pulled over by the police.
Now, anybody who plies the Mandela Highway route knows that if a police
roadblock is set up, there is no way you can easily evade that trap. Now this action by the police force allowing the vehicle to escape is damning when you are requesting the government to grant you more powers in the name of a State of Emergency to get criminals.
Based on statements made by the commissioner that the police were acting on intelligence, it seems that they were really after Al Miller.
And, Commissioner, there is a vast difference between intelligence-gathering and a tip-off.
Commissioner Ellington, you and your police force need to resign and go plant yam and bananas. But then again, farming takes a level of common sense and intelligence which the police force seems to lack.
