Hyatt, Brown place Saints on top
AN attacking, unbeaten century from Danza Hyatt and a five-wicket haul from ace leg-spinner Odean Brown pushed St Catherine Saints on the verge of a first-innings lead over Kingston Tigers in their Jamaican Super Cricket League match at Chedwin Park yesterday.
After dismissing Kingston for 187, the home team hurried to 149-2 at the close, despite losing Damion Bryce and former Jamaica wicketkeeper/batsman Keith Hibbert before the team had a run on the board.
Hyatt struck seven fours and six sixes off 105 balls for his 102, while middle-order batsman Junior Stewart is not out on 39. Both will try to build on their 149-run third-wicket partnership when play resumes today at 10:00 am.
Andrew Richardson and Fabian Forbes have taken one wicket each for Kingston.
Earlier yesterday, Brown, who returned to the island after a successful spell with the West Indies ‘A’ team in Bangladesh and in England, tormented the Kingston batsmen to finish with 5-29 in 16 overs and two balls.
Only Simon Jackson and Fabian Forbes provided worthwhile resistance with a 93-run stand for the fifth wicket. Jackson made 73 off 138 balls, inclusive of seven fours and a six, while Forbes made 36.
Off-spinner Bevon Brown chipped in 3-58, while Hyatt took 2-15 for St Catherine.
At Alpart, visitors Melbourne have already secured first-innings honours from St Elizabeth Warriors. Christopher Lamont took 6-34 to rout St Elizabeth for 81.
In reply, Melbourne were comfortably placed on 120-3 at the close. John Ross Campbell struck 49, while Marlon Samuels is unbeaten on 37 against Howard Powell, who has taken two wicket thus far.
An unbeaten 135 from Adrian Thompson and 73 from Nickoy Samuels also put Westmoreland Wizards in a strong position against Trelawny Buccaneers at the Little London Sports Ground.
Batting first, the Buccaneers made a modest 133 as Rajiv Service made 65 against Derval Green’s 5-19. In reply, Westmoreland ended the day on 287-6 against Damian Parchment’s 4-64.
At the Port Rhoades Sports Club in St Ann, the Manchester Lions are poised to secure first-innings points over the Cutters.
Batting first, the Lions posted 273 all out despite five-wicket hauls from Duran White and Andre Dwyer. Daniel Ricketts made 62, while Zeniffe Fowler made 45 for the Lions.
Xavier Marshall has fought a lone battle for St Ann so far with 83 not out in their 138-6. Stephon Patterson and David Powell have taken two wickets each for Manchester.
