Spartans eye Southern Conference semis
SPANISH Town Spartans moved closer towards a semi-final spot in the Southern Conference/Insport Community League Basketball League after victory at the National Stadium Courts on Tuesday.
Spartans defeated Saints, 81-64, to sit atop Zone One with maximum eight points.
In the night’s other games, Arnett Gardens Rockers beat Fire Service, 63-58, and Mega Mart Blazers stopped North Street Heats, 59-52.
Lynford Brown led the way for Spartans with 17 points, followed by David Harrison with 15 points and Chris Jennings, 13.
Elvenda Norman posted a game-high 18 points with 25 rebounds in the Saints’ losing effort, with support from Conroy Morgan with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The Saints never really threatened the group leaders, who led 22-10 at half-time and 62-44 at the end of the third quarter.
Meanwhile, Arnett Rockers registered their third win from as many games in Zone Two, thanks to a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds from Kwame Lawrence and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Arnell Campbell.
Narado Gordon produced Fire Sevice’s best effort with 15 points and eight rebounds.
In a keen contest, the teams were level at 32-32 at half-time, but the Rockers edged ahead during the third quarter to take a 48-42 lead and emerge eventually winners after both finished with 16 points in the final quarter.
Mega Mart Blazers scored their first win of the round when they defeated the high-flying Heats. Damian Richards topscored for the Blazers with 19 points, while Rodhy Bloomfield contributed 14 points and 19 rebounds.
The Heats’ Devin Jenkins was the game’s leading scorer with 24 points, while Carey Grizzle assisted with 10.
Meanwhile, all games scheduled for this weekend have been postponed.
