Digicel announces 15% subscriber growth
JAMAICAN-based Irish telecommunications company Digicel has announced a 15 per cent growth in subscribers to 10.8 million across the 32 markets it serves worldwide.
In a statement today Digicel said that most growth came in the Central American and Pacific markets, which contributed to revenues of US$2.2 billion for the financial year ending March 31 2010. This represented a 12 per cent increase in revenues on the previous financial year.
“It’s been another great year for Digicel. Our promise and commitment to our customers to deliver best value, best service and best network is continuing to translate into sustained growth and strong performance resulting in us once again over delivering against all of our internal targets,” said Digicel Group Chief Executive Officer Colm Delves.
Growth in the saturated Jamaican market was slower with the company growing its subscriber base by three per cent and underlying revenues by 2 per cent.
The company also boasted regional growth in data, postpaid and Blackberry services. Among the 24 markets covered by Digicel Group Limited (Caribbean and El Salvador), data revenues grew 18 per cent, postpaid subscribers by 31 per cent and BlackBerry users by 138 per cent.
This calendar year Digicel plans to launch its consumer WiMAX services across Jamaica and 3G service in the French West Indies and Bermuda.
