Bus strike follows World Cup match
SOUTH AFRICA 2010
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) — The manager of Johannesburg’s new rapid bus service says a drivers’ strike after a World Cup match has affected hundreds of fans.
Jackie Huntley, chief executive of the management company, says up to 1,000 fans who should have been bused from Soccer City stadium after yesterday’s Netherlands-Denmark game were instead put on trains.
Huntley says drivers were protesting because they believe their shifts were changed without proper notice — a charge she rejects.
Protests — some violent — slowed implementation of the bus system last year. Private commuter service operators complain it will ruin their business.
Stadium security workers in Cape Town and Durban also went on strike yesterday.
