Rally behind our troops
Dear Editor,
I refer to your May 26 article, “Overwhelming support for our troops in Tivoli”. But first, I would like to express my appreciation to the men and women who have been charged to rid us of the lawlessness that has stained our beautiful country.
I urge Jamaicans tired of living in fear, or hiding behind their prisons with burglar bars, high walls and gates to rally behind those who sacrifice their lives and the well-being of their family’s future.
I join the call for the government to set up a fund or account that will serve as ancillary support for the troops and police officers in this time of need. Let it be known through our generosity that every Jamaican from all strata of society supports the actions of our law enforcement groups to rid us of the necrosis that has placed our country in a state of paralysis for too long.

The funds should be used to provide our troops immediately with the logistical support they require to sustain our momentum in ferreting out the bad elements, whether the need lies in the acquisition of additional safety equipment and ammunition to match our enemies’, or feeding and comforting the souls of the men and women who represent our collective cry for a return to civility and justice.
Let it also serve to provide support to the families of those officers and soldiers who are injured or lose their lives in this our most resounding rebellion against the status quo.
Let us ensure that their children are not left destitute from their sacrifice in our service and that no opportunity is lost by their parents’ heroism. Let us continue to restore the rule of law which is meant to provide all of us with the security and safety that we deserve.
We should also request that the government set up an account to fund civic and educational programmes that will provide opportunities in these blighted breeding grounds of criminals, ensuring that we are balanced in our justice and understanding of what creates criminals.
The rule of law that binds us as a nation must be restored so the greater good can work towards providing our country with the prosperity we all deserve and ensuring that no Jamaican needs to live barricaded in private garrisons of high-fenced walls and steel-covered doors and windows.
