Much respect, Cuba
Dear Editor,
I really appreciated the recent article on the celebration of Cuba’s 1961 victory in the Bay of Pigs Invasion. What a great little nation! It was like the biblical battle between David and Goliath. Young Cuba defeated the attack by the most powerful nation
in the world just two years after overthrowing the cruel Batista dictatorship.
The attempts to turn back progress in Cuba have never stopped. They include media campaigns, numerous bombings and attempts at assassinating government leaders. Then there is the economic embargo which causes untold hardship for the people of Cuba. A less determined nation would have given in to the pressure long ago. But Cuba has withstood the pressure and has made significant progress in medical science, education, sports and all aspects of social life.
Why is Cuba being attacked? Cuba shows that it is possible for a little Third-World nation to be truly independent and to choose its own path of development. Cuba has proved that it is possible for a Third-World nation to be fully literate. Cuba is showing by example how nations can cooperate peacefully without any desire for one to dominate the other. Much respect to Cuba!
