Join us in the classroom, Rev
Dear Editor,
In response to Rev Dr Raulston Nembhard’s article of April 28, I wish to inform him that the responsibility of enlightening our children does not rest only with the teachers but other social agents within the society. We are also hypocritical if we teach one thing and do another. Trust in any relationship is important and that is lacking between the teachers and the government. One should not make a promise if one cannot keep it, neither should an agreement be signed twice without it being honoured. We are mindful of the economic situation, but life still goes on for all of us with our various responsibilities. I am sure if you knew what obtains in the classroom your point of view would change.
Teachers have been holding “strain” and have signed one agreement twice for the same money. We did not twist the arm of the government; it was they who proposed for the money (a single payment) to be paid in four parts; May and July 2010, another in 2011 and a final payment in 2012. Inflation would have eroded the value of this money, but being reasonable and patriotic we agreed to this payment schedule. As a teacher, I do not have the luxury of an air-conditioned office or driving a vehicle worth millions. Still, I am committed to do whatever is in my power to “enlighten” the children who are entrusted in my care. Would you spend one day or even a month in a classroom with 35 students and whenever it becomes unbearably hot venture outside and have your class under a tree? Come and “live” with us in the classroom and then let’s hear your story.
