TIME TO GET THAT BALL ROLLING
IT’S drawing close to that time of year when school, studying and exams are over and the graduating class of 2010 is eagerly awaiting their school ball. TEENs around the island are excited. Being excited is quite acceptable, but in the midst of all the enthusiasm, there are plans that need to be made in order to have a fulfilling ball experience. Ladies, in particular, have to bear in mind that certain strategies have to be put in place for this special night. Here are some preparations that need to be on the checklist.
The Dress and Tux
The most essential part of any girl’s ball is her dress. Whether you decide to go with a long, short or even an outrageous dress, ensure that it fits perfectly. Sometimes persons gain or lose weight after purchasing, so fitting your dress on a regular basis would be wise. Be sure that, at least one week before the big day, you try it on and move around for a while. Standing in front of the mirror and twirling a few times is not enough! I’m sure you wouldn’t want to be trying to have a good time whith a wardrobe malfunction.
Guys also have to make big decisions where the tuxedo is concerned. You may not be able to go out and buy a three-piece-suit, but coordinating the colours is stil very important. Be sure to find out the colour of your date’s dress. If you are going without a date, choose a colour that complements your complexion, or a neutral one. As with the girls, be sure to try on your suit again at least a week or two before the ball and have the necessary adjustments made in time for the big day.
Shoes
Shoes are also of importance as they not only highlight the dress or the suit, but help to complete the outfit. Bear in mind that you probably will be standing in them for a good portion of the night. Therefore, when purchasing, buy a pair that will be comfortable so you will not have to trade them in for flip-flops in the middle of the night. That looks tacky. Guys would not have the option of a flip-flop trade-in, but I’m sure you don’t want sores on your feet after dancing the entire night.
Also, remember that all new shoes need to be ‘broken in’. Walk around in them through the house a few times and be sure to check the heel tips before the big day. For those of you who will not be purchasing new shoes, walking around in your shoes is still important. Remember that it’s about comfort, not just style. Also guys, remember that polish is your frend so buy or borrow the correct colour so your shoes can look like new.
Hair
By now you should know the date of your ball, and with everybody wanting to have the perfect do, TEENage recommends that you make your hair appointments at least a month before to ensure that you don’t get caught in the last minute rush. This appointment is essential as hairdressers tend to be packed during graduation and ball periods. Get a hairstyle that’s simple and chic. Avoid getting an outrageous hairstyle, because after all the partying, your hair can flop and then those pics will not be very flattering. If you’re bold enough, a haircut or a new colour would be nice and why not throw in a treatment while you’re there? Remember, though, to let your hairdresser know what you have in mind as some treatments — like colour and relaxing — may need to be done a few weeks prior to the event.
Guys may not have to worry about hair appointments, but be sure to get the hair and facial hair trimmed before the big day. Those who plan to try colour should be sure to make appointments with a hairdresser you trust. You wouldn’t want to try something new and look like a complete mess.
Make-up and Nails
After acquiring that wonderful hairdo, a girl needs to have her make-up done. It can be done at home but if you do not trust yourself, a professional makeup artiste might be the better choice. Shopping around is a good idea. Check friends and family to get a referred person, but do it quickly so you can secure your spot.
If you also plan to get your nails done, please see to it that you book an appointment with a nail technician as early as possible.
The Date
During one of the most memorable moments in a girl’s life, it would be a shame not to have a date for your ball. Even if you are going steady with one person, it does not mean you can’t go with someone else. While the romance of ball may seem like a night for couples, this is not always the best scenario. Remember that this a night that you are going to look back on 20 years later, so you want it to be a night to remember. Therefore, choose a date that won’t be a nuisance, but rather one you can enjoy the night with.
After-Parties
If you’re planning on going to an after-party, ensure that you have enough money and a ride back home. You should also see to it that you don’t become intoxicated as this leads to unawareness of one’s surroundings which is, above all, dangerous.
Here are some final tips:
1. Consider all costs and choose the most reasonable prices.
2. Try to be as unique as possible (without going overboard).
3. Don’t lose it in the romance. It is very easy for both girls and guys to get caught up in the romantic whirlwind of ball and think that sex would be an amazing addition to the evening. The pressure to have sex on ball night is great but nothing will ruin your ball memories faster than a hasty sexual encounter. Ball night romance and sex are not a package deal – ball is more than a three letter word.
