O’Brien: I wouldn’t have done what Jay Leno did
In his first post-Tonight show interview, Conan O’Brien said that if he had been in Jay Leno’s shoes, he would not have taken back the show less than a year after publicly handing it off to someone else.
“That’s me, you know,” O’Brien told Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes in an interview to be broadcast tonight, excerpts of which were released Thursday by CBS. “Everyone’s got their own way … of doing things.” O’Brien, in the midst of a sold-out concert tour, said he decided to leave NBC because “this relationship is going to be toxic and maybe we just need to go our separate ways”. It was the comic’s first interview about the late-night television drama that played out this winter.
He has since been hired by TBS, where he will launch a talk show in November. In a transition laid out five years earlier, Leno left Tonight last year and O’Brien took over. NBC worried about losing Leno to a competitor so the network gave him a prime-time show five nights a week. That failed on two fronts: affiliates objected to Leno’s low ratings and threatened to pull the show, and O’Brien’s poor Tonight show ratings enabled CBS’ David Letterman to surge ahead to first place.
NBC tried to please both comics by offering Leno a half-hour show at 11:35 pm and letting O’Brien keep the Tonight show name and begin a half-hour later. O’Brien said no and Leno, who never wanted to leave Tonight in the first place, slipped back into his old home. “I wouldn’t have done that,” O’Brien said. Asked by Kroft what he would have done, O’Brien said, “Done something else, go someplace else. I mean, that’s just me.” NBC and a Leno spokesman had no comment about O’Brien’s statements.
Kylie Minogue shows off her taut wrinkle-free face at charity gala
She once claimed to have given up cosmetic procedures. If so, Kylie must have found some other way of turning back the clock.
Looking at least a decade younger than her 41 years, Kylie was the belle of the ball at the fourth annual Linked Against Leukemia (DKMS) charity gala in New York. And clearly it wasn’t just her frock she had spent time and preparation on. Kylie unveiled a wrinkle-free forehead and flawless complexion at the event last night. Her nude cinched-in-at-the-waist dress, with its bandage-effect wrappings and sheer top embellished with crystals, should have taken centre stage. But all eyes were on the 41-year-old’s taut face. Last year she finally admitted one of the worst-kept secrets in showbiz — that she has had Botox. Kylie told Elle magazine: “For all time women have wanted to, for the most part, look their best. It’s just that what we have available to us today is what it is today, and if you want to take advantage of it, yeah.”

Rihanna’s in the mood for love as she shoots sumptuous new video in a French château
Rihanna was clearly in the mood for love as she appeared on the set of her new video. The Bajan singer ditched her usual edgy outfits for a romantic, flowing maxi-dress as she shot the promo for her new single Te Amo. After performing at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy on Wednesday night for her Last Girl On Earth world tour, Rihanna was up bright and early the following morning to shoot the promo at a château in the nearby town of Vigny. With manicured grounds surrounded by fog against the backdrop of the 16th century castle, Rihanna looked every inch the romantic heroine. Joining the 22-year-old on location was French supermodel Laeticia Casta. While Rihanna and director Anthony Mandler are keeping tight-lipped about the video’s storyline, a casting call asked for “beautiful, sexy and glamorous” females who are “comfortable in their bodies”.
