Suggestions to fight crime
Dear Editor,
Congratulations to Mr Owen Ellington who has been appointed commissioner of police.
Indeed, he has his hands full to try to put the crime monster to rest.
Following are a few proposals I have to fight crime:
* The Minister of National Security and the Commissioner should ask for more overseas help.
* Ask for financial assistance from any international organisation to fund the setting up of CCTVs on some of the utility poles across the island with connections to the nearest police station, so that the police can detect criminal activities.
* Praedial larceny is affecting farmers seriously and CCTV can help the police track down thieves, and when caught, they should compensate farmers with interest and the courts with double interest.
* Establish police zones, especially in the troubled areas, and set up a community relations office operated by the police, to receive more information from citizens.
* Set up a police sports club in all the troubled areas so that the police and citizens can be one.
* Ask the church and private sector organisations to assist with a development programme for the people, such as in education and general skills training.
* At certain hours of the night and also in the day when schools are in session and people are at work, the police must not allow anyone to be loitering on the streets.
* Criminals should do community service for the time they are behind bars.
* Clean out corrupt cops from the JCF and let them do community service also.
I wish God’s blessing on the commissioner and the rest of the force.
