We Want More
With the recent successful staging of the “One Night Only” concert, staged by UWI Pop Society, patrons were eager to hear and see more of what they had to offer.
Held in the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, the performances were broken up into various sets with there being a mixture of male and female vocals for many of the songs. Their song selections and delivery in many ways managed to exceed the expectations of patrons, who were more or less looking to simply come out to “support their friends”.
The initial part of the performance was inclusive of hip-hop songs like I’ve Got a Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas, Rude Boy by Rihanna, and Bust Your Windows by Jazmine Sullivan. There was also a segment with some old-school reggae, including songs like Action by Nadine Sutherland, Everyone Falls in Love Sometimes by Tanto Metro and Devonte, and one of the favourites of the female patrons, Shy Guy by Diana King, had many singing along to favourites of the early 1990s.
There was also an old-school medley of international songs like These Arms of Mine by Otis Redding, Stop in the Name of Love by the Supremes and My Girl by the Temptations. This set showed the creativity put into the concert as the females and males of the Pop Society traded the microphones and the spotlight while performing songs to each other and, at the same time, showing off a few dance moves.
Right before intermission the band was allowed to introduce themselves with performances on their respective instruments, and all did a great job. Hits of the more recent times like Black Book and Messenger by Tessanne Chin, Reasons by Hoobastank, Sober by Pink and Fireflies by Owl City were also among the artillery repertoire. Not leaving out the dancehall fans Hope and Pray by Mavado and Spell It Out by Tifa were also performed. Both songs had males and females respectively vocalising their approval of the selections. In bringing both the females and males together, the crowd rocked from left to right while singing Welcome to Jamrock by Junior Gong.
There was a cameo guest performance by upcoming artiste Chevaughn, who soothed the crowd with the brilliantly written track No More. As expected, he also performed Holiday which brought the crowd to their feet, singing and doing the Summer Swing.
The UWI Pop Society concert was brought to a close with a One Night Only medley. The talent of the band members and the various singers was definitely something to witness and many were surprised to know that no member of the group was a member of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, which is known for a high turnout of musical talent. All in all, the concert was brilliantly delivered and it will certainly have persons looking out for upcoming shows.
