Is the extradition treaty between US, Jamaica fair?
Dear Editor,
I have noticed in recent times, both in the print and electronic media, that every Jamaican man, woman and child is now an “authority” on the International Extradition Treaty between Jamaica and the United States of America.
The extradition treaty that now exists between Jamaica and the United States was signed by the former PNP Government some time in 1994 and it has benefited the USA since then.
I cannot recall any request sent by us to the Americans for one of their citizens to come to Jamaica to answer to any alleged criminal charges. It appears that when these criminal acts take place it is only the Jamaicans who are the guilty ones. There are a few questions I would like to ask.
Have the so-called “associates” of Mr Christopher ‘Dudus’Coke — whose extradition the USA has demanded to answer gun and drug charges in New York — been charged? Are they in jail? Is the ‘gun dealer’ licensed by the State of New York to sell guns, and if so, to whom did he sell the guns, seeing that Mr Coke has not been to the USA in 25 years? How did that transaction take place? The Jamaican Government should be asking the US Government these relevant questions.
Also, do the relevant authorities, the Attorney General’s Department, really believe that Mr Coke will get a fair trial in New York?
