Dinthill exposes talent
Impressed with the amazing sounds of the steel pan from the Dinthill Technical High School, the TEENage team could not wait to share this article with Jamaica.
The Dinthill Technical High School was erected in 1938 on 137 acres of land. The School specialises in Electronics, Technical Drawing, Agriculture, Auto-mechanics and Food and Nutrition.
The students of Dinthill, through their love for music, were able to play and have controlled dance movements while playing their instruments in the school’s steel pan band. Vice-Principal Audrey Sinclair, told TEENage that the school had only received the steel pans in January of this year. Since then, their practice sessions last an entire day, twice a week. They also recieve help from the well-known steel pan band Silver Bird. They have been able to play a number of songs, which the TEENage team was privileged to listen to. Hits like Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean, Beat It and Thriller really impressed the team, but it was only when the band began to play the latest hits of 2010 by dancehall artistes Vybz Kartel, Black Ryno, Konshens and Lisa Hyper, that the team was truly awed by the students’ musical skills which they have acquired from only two months of practice.
The first performers were Nah Sheppa (Ricardo Russel) and Devrel (Wayne Wint), with a song entitled Boasy. They had a great crowd response as all eventually joined in singing the lyrics to the song.
Illegal Dancers, an all-male dance group, came next to display their creative dance moves. Though the crowd response wasn’t as supportive, the dancers continued full of energy. However, just as they were to end, a surprise came in the form of a male student dressed as a female, gyrating to local artistes Spice and Pamputay’s Slim vs Fluffy, whichdrove the students into bursts of laughter.
The third performers, DJ Non Smile, Blaze and Piggy Hype (Rennard Burguess, Xzavier Bowie and Sanjae Mitchell, respectively), failed to impress their schoolmates but continued with a positive vibe throughout their performance, hoping for the best.
Rani Nesbeth, the next performer, did a rendition of Demi Lovato’s This is Me, then a gospel song which was written by her entitled, Lord Jesus.
DJ Subra (Brandon Stone) was up next, and as he drove the crowd wild with his lyrics, he did not fail in his short time on stage to entertain all who were present; he was certainly a crowd favourite.
After gracing the audience with one part of his talent, DJ Sheppa (Ricardo Russel) graced the stage once more with his dub poetry,Too Much War and Crime. The piece pleaded to the nation’s criminals to stop the crime and violence and try to live in peace and harmony.
The students were also entertained by pieces from Cameal Wilson, Zodie Wilson and Romano Beton.
Later, the students were asked to come up with a jingle for the sponsors, Freshhh. With the Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks’s hit, No Air, obviously still in the air, Rojae Wellington used this to his advantage as he sent the crowd into of laughter with his Freshhh jingle done to the same melody.
Finally, the results were at hand: in third place were Nah Sheppa and Devrel for the song Boasy; in second place, DJ Subra; and in first place, Nah Sheppa again, but this time, for his dub poetry, Too Much War and Crime.
After such stiff competition with the talent show, the TEENage team decided to surprise the students with some musical relief by Ras Penco, Chevaughn, Mixing Lab and Stretch.
