Use stadium site for hospital
Dear Editor,
With the completion of the high schools’ championships, it has become apparent that the National Stadium is showing its age. It was barely state-of-the-art when it opened in 1962 and it has not aged very well. Not surprising, many people are offering ideas for its replacement and the conversion of the site into something more conducive to commercial ventures.
Of course, any revenue-producing activity would be fine. But if a new, thoroughly modern multi-purpose athletic centre is to be built somewhere outside Kingston, then the present location of the National Stadium could be an excellent site for a large, new modern hospital that could serve Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. Good medical care will never go out of fashion. With a modern hospital serving a regional market, Jamaica could in the near future be as distinguished for its medical care as it is for its athletic prowess.
