Beautify entire island
Dear Editor,
Jamaica needs a new islandwide beautification campaign. It should start with a serious and sustained attempt at reforestation. Over the long run this might even help to alleviate the severe water shortage that constantly plagues the island. Then, as in the past, there should be a town-by-town cleaning and painting campaign involving public buildings as well as private homes.
There should be a competition for the most beautiful town in each parish and the most beautiful town in the entire island. There should also be a competition of the best kept school in each parish as well as islandwide. Sponsors should include the government, big businesses and individuals of means. Teams of volunteers should travel around judging the nominated entrants and they should be featured in the newspapers and on television. Such a competition could refocus the attention of Jamaicans of all ages, all classes, and all occupations on their country. A competition like this held at regular intervals could be a positive achievement for the country and its citizens.
