Walter, Campbell win at Carifta swim meet
JAMAICA had won two gold medals at press time on the first day of the Carifta Swimming Championships at the National Stadium Pool last night.
Dominic Walter, swimming from lane five, captured the Boys 15-17 1500m freestyle in 16:56.07 ahead of Stefan Sharpe of Trinidad and Tobago in 17:08.98.
Minutes later, Kevaughan Campbell claimed the country’s second gold, winning the Boys 11-12 200m breaststroke in a time of 2:43.21 ahead of Zach Moses of the Bahamas, 2:50.76.
Gabrielle Hopkins clocked 3:06.58 for fifth place in the Girls equivalent, won by Coral Tomascik of the Cayman Islands in 2:55.71. Nadani Dixon was eighth in a time of 3:13.07.
Danielle Booth’s time of 2:58.83 was only good enough for fifth in the Girls 13-14 category, while Jessica Stephenson of Guyana claimed the event in 2:46.33.
Other Jamaicans scheduled for finals yesterday were Stefani Webley in the 13-14 50m backstroke and 100m Butterfly; Timothy Wynter in the boys equivalents; Kendese Nangle in the 15-17 50m backstroke and 100m backstroke, Ivana Chang in the 100m 11-12 butterfly, and Kevaughan Campbell in the boys section.
