Flexxing with…Chevaughn
After making strides in the business with Ding Dong on the summer hit Holiday, Chevaughn Clayton of Notnice Productions has quite a story to tell and has big plans for this year.
Starting out in the church — as most singers do — he entered Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) competitions and won Best Gospel Solo, four years consecutively, as well as Best Afro-Caribbean Item. After winning the Tastee Talent Competition in 1997, he continued his musical journey recording I’ve Got Everything with Prodigal Son in 2001. Chevaughn didn’t stop there, as he continued on the trail by going on tour with Father HoLung and Friends, working with ASHE as a drummer and becoming a student at the Edna Manley College of the Performing Arts. It was there that he and his friends started the group Notice Productions, then called Further Notice Band. In 2006, he joined the band C Sharp and went on tour with artistes, including Rita Marley, Cherine Anderson, Sly & Robby and Tony Rebel.
Inspired by love, peace and all that is good in life and everyday situations, Chevaughn told TEENage that although he isn’t a gospel artiste, he produces ‘good music that’s uplifting, sounds good and makes you feel good’.
So far this year he has finished a tour in Europe with Queen Ifrica, done some Caribbean tours and performed with Omari at Fun in the Son, a few weeks ago. He has also released Tables with Christopher Martin, Ding Dong and Craig. But it doesn’t end here, he hopes to complete a mix tape, get on some school tours, record a few videos and, of course, keep recording. Other plans include a tour with Jimmy Cliff at the end of summer and introducing new artiste Damari.
The Bridgeport High past student first saw himself as a gynaecologist until music became his motive. He taught himself the drums and fell in love with percussion instruments. Although busy with music, he spends his spare time reading and writing music, or reading inspirational books. “I balance it all by keeping in communication with the people I love. I avoid making promises I can’t keep and do my best to make time for the family.”
