VCB doubtful for Commonwealth Games
NEWLY-CROWNED World Indoor Championship 60-metre gold medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown is almost certain to miss this year’s 19th Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, from October 4-13.
“Well currently, I don’t think it will be a go,” her agent Claude Bryan told the Observer.
“We haven’t sat down and made a final decision, but given the time of the year that it is, I just can’t see it happening with the World Championships coming up next year,” he added.
Campbell-Brown, who is now conditioned by Atlanta-based coach Anthony Carpenter, clocked a life time best 7.00 seconds to win the 60-metre gold medal in Doha, Qatar, on March 14.
The two-time Olympic 200 metres champion and winner of 100m titles at the World Youth, Junior and Senior Championships levels, will instead only focus on the IAAF Diamond league outdoor circuit.
In the meantime, coach Carpenter believes Campbell-Brown will be a force to contend with this season, having addressed some of her technical flaws.
“So our goal this year is to basically make her as competitive as possible in the 100m and then maintain the position that she’s had in the 200m for the last couple of years,” he posited.
“There is a few women in front of her in the 100m right now and we want to be a player at the level where they are at this point in time, so we know 10.85secs is not going to get it done and we’re focused on running faster than she’s run before,” he reasoned.
