Harris tames Doyley in Junior Champs
DANIEL Harris upstaged favourite Ramone Doyley, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 8-6, to secure the Boys 18 trophy at the Guardian Life Junior Tennis Championships on Sunday at Liguanea Club in New Kingston.
It was Harris’ first victory over Doyley in four meetings, the win coming on a hot, windy afternoon in the Llockett McGregor Junior Tennis Series.
“For the first two games, the wind was really messing with my head… after a while I got the hang of it and started pressuring his backhand. Even though I lost the first set, he lost the rhythm in his forehand. My serve was very good, giving me a lot of free points,” added Harris.
Noted Doyley: “Danny has really been training. He really went out and played a good match. I had some problems with my forehand. I was leading throughout the whole match, but my head kind of got in the way of it when I was serving for the match and lost the game, and I ended up just losing.”
Shantal Blackwood drubbed Shelita Haughton, 6-0, 6-2, to capture the Girls 18 title, while Maya Ricketts held off Selena Blythe, 6-4, 6-4, for the Girls 14 crown.
Roger Lyn Jr maintained his dominance in the Boys 14, beating Neils Van Dam, 6-1, 6-0, while Luke Roberts stopped Blaise Bicknell, 6-1, 7-5, for the Boys 12 trophy.
