Flexxing with: Camar
Describing himself as creative, exceptional and humble, Camar Doyles, better known to us as Flava Unit, took some time to flexx with TEENage during his visit to Jamaica. He has been based in the USA and got signed to Slip N Slide Records in 2008. With the popular record company supporting him, he picked up a new stage name.
“Flava Unit is my dancehall/reggae side, but Camar is the international name, and I’m working on my international approach right now.”
Known for songs such as Girls Request featuring Kid Kurupt, Your Body’s Calling and Wine and Twist, Camar describes his musical style as futuristic fusions, or in one word ‘yardsoul.’ Not far from this unique music is his fashion styles that usually include a mix of interesting colours and designs, or as he calls it ‘futuristic swag’.
Growing up in Portmore, the St George’s College old boy says his inspiration comes from friends and family, as well as the love for music and everyday life.
Spending his free time playing video games, hanging out with friends and partying, the self-motivated Camar works wherever he is. Recently releasing his mixtape entitled The Break is Over, he is working on other projects with Slip N Slide Records, producing and writing with local producer Jam2 Productions and assisting with producing for Florida-based production house Togetherness Records.
“Some of the best things about music are that you can express yourself, you get the opportunity to travel and the chance to work with persons who have the same passion for music that you do.”
Already travelling to a few European countries; he hopes that Africa, China and South America are some of the places he will stop. Having already worked with Delano (Renaissance), I’m Loud Music, Dave Stewart (international writer) and Jam2 Productions, he hopes to get the opportunity to work with Jah Vinchi, Lady Saw and Sizzla.
In closing we asked him about ‘Camarsian’ and he explained that ‘Camarsian’ is a word to describe his world and his music. “It’s my own way of staying focused and motivated. My advice is to live life with a goal in mind, sometimes the greatest invention is a mistake”.
