Retirement claim first win in Malvern League
MALVERN, St Elizabeth — After losing their opening game and earning a draw in the second, Retirement gave it their all to beat Smithfield 1-0 in the Malvern League at the Bethlehem College playing field last week.
The all important goal came in the 35th minute when defender Seymour Brown’s powerful right-footed free kick from just outside the 18-yard box left the goalkeeper with little chance.
Retirement’s coach Kemar Christian was proud of his team’s accomplishment.
“I said after the first match we would bounce back; we have, so just expect greater things from us,” he said.
Losing coach Horace Henry of Smithfield said, “I’m disappointed; we could have played a lot better.”
In other games, Champion All Stars defeated Kinowl 2-0 and undefeated Corby stopped Schoolfield 2-1.
Champion’s goals came from Chris Dyer in the 20th and Dean Thomas in the 28th.
The prolific Mahlon Miller scored for the well-organised Corby in the fourth and 27th minutes, while Schoolfield’s
consolation came when a defender put the ball into his own net in the 20th.
